Humanists Malta
A court in Malta recently took evidence from an exorcist in response to an accused who claimed to channel a demon when performing various sex acts on a vulnerable family. Although the priest had ‘not encountered a demonic presence’ and had not heard any of the alleged voices, he performed religious rites, including exorcism (he also, sensibly, checked that the family was seeking medical care). It is bizarre that in 2023 a court should consider evidence about demonic possession. Hopefully Fr John Vella was not summoned by the courts as an expert on the matter at hand, and his testimony should ideally revolve clearly around what he observed whilst in the household, rather than whether he had encountered a demonic presence. It is sad that the "highest" institution, which should be unmovable on verifiable evidence, should consider such testimony. No state entity should work under the assumption that Satan or demons exist. But mental and emotional disturbance, delusions, and coercion by evil-doers, do exist. If exorcisms or similar rites ‘work’ (which it seems they didn’t in this case) that’s due to the power of suggestion. This brings to mind the case of Paulina Demska, murdered by a man who claimed that ‘the great one illuminates me’ and the devil told him to kill more people. The danger stemming from fanatical religious belief, in victims or perpetrators, is clear. Those claiming ‘possession’ or their understanding of teachings from such as the River of Love, cannot go unchallenged, including by satirists such as Bis-Serjetà. ... See MoreSee Less

Beware Of ‘Scientific’ Scare Stories: Correlation Is Not Causation

An article by TVM news claims that ‘eating fish twice a week puts you at increased risk of melanoma’, citing a long-term study of more than 490,000 adults by Brown University in the US. What the TVM article doesn’t say is that, while the study indeed identified an...

A Secular Constitution for Malta

A welcome comment by Alfred Sant, questioning the constitutional role of the Catholic Church. As we have been saying since 2012, we believe the state should be wholly neutral on matters of religion or belief. Why would any Catholic (guaranteed freedom of conscience by...
